Photoshop is a must, but a lot have people are starting to use Pixelmator as well.
Adobe Illustrator is a huge plus to know in order to control vector graphics.
To get started, I always just try to inspire myself by looking at what other churches and designers are doing. As far as learning new tricks, there are endless tutorials out there. For church message slides, Google: “Photoshop Text Effect tutorials” to find a ton of tutorials.
There are also free resources in case you get in a bind as well:
