Compassion in Action 2009

October 9, 2009

Compassion in Action is a annual event with 12Stone Church. It gives us an opportunity to unite together as a church and reach out to meet the needs of people in our local neighborhoods and communities.

Projects are located in the North GA area and include neighborhood food drives, landscaping, painting, apartment block parties, cookouts, and more.

This year Mary Anne Morgan recruited me and about 8 other photographers to cover the massive event. Over 60 projects were going on simultaneously with hundreds of volunteers. I feel that I got the coolest project in South Atlanta. Ran by Tim and Becky O’Mara, this project included a massive clean-up of a thousand abandoned tires.

Usually when you get new tires, you pay a tire disposal fee, in which the shop is supposed to take and properly dispose (duh?). Sometimes, however, the shop pockets that money and dumps the tires in neighborhoods as this one. It’s a shame to see but I was blessed seeing the clean-up of this neighborhood.

The photos below cover the morning at 12Stone (some worship before everyone is sent out), the tire & trash clean-up of a neighborhood in south Atlanta, a complimentary car-wash / oil change, and a clean-up of a local church in Lawrenceville.
